Do you have an older Christmas tree than 60 years? A Forces family from Oakham bought theirs in Gibraltar and it's traveled with them ever since, complete with working lights.
David and Betty Barnford say it's part of their Christmas tradition, even if the lights took a bit of tinkering to work this year, as David explains.
"Yeah, the tree itself is about three and a half, four feet tall. It's got 40 lights on it. And it's lit pretty well every year that we've got it out and tried it. A couple of times we've replaced bulbs, which is fair enough on a 60 year old tree, I suppose. And this year we got it out and set it all up and turned it on, and it didn't work. So I set about it with a voltmeter, checked all 40 lamps, all 40 lamp holders, all the 40 leads, oh 80 leads, go through two wires on each, and it took me about three hours to find the fault, which turned out to be a broken line, so I just twisted the wires together and it worked."
