Traffic orders will be issued this week to close the 11 smaller gaps in the central reservation of the A1 between South Witham and Little Ponton, following a campaign by Rutland and Stamford's MP, Alicia Kearns at a recent council meeting on safety of the Great North Road.
The work could start within weeks. Alicia Kearns welcomes the news from National Highways but says there's more to be done to address the larger crossings on the road.
"Now these are some of the smaller ones, it's still the really big ones that people of course are really concerned about, but this is the first step in me delivering on that promise to you that central reservation crossings would close, and I'm absolutely delighted that it's happening while the safety works that I've secured are finishing up."
The highways authority says this is the first phase of their work and they are looking at closing the larger gaps between Stamford and North Nottinghamshire once they've closed the 11 smaller crossings. Safety improvement works have been going on since January during the evening and overnight on the A1 between South Witham and Grantham to improve signage, road markings and resurfacing, replacing solar road studs and clearing vegetation.
