Rutland Day celebrations are taking place today at Oakham Castle.
The celebration of the county at this time of year can be traced back to 1755 when the 58th Rutlandshire Regiment of Foot adopted the county designation of Rutland. They served in Gibraltar for 14 years, including during the Great Siege, the longest in the British Army's history. The modern day celebration started at Rutland Water in 2007 to mark 10 years of the county's independence being regained and 30 years of Rutland Water. Today between 10:00 and 4:00 there's a county celebration at the castle which includes performances from the Rutland Choral Society and Rutland Morris, re-enactors from the Ferrers Household, archery, as well as a chance to see the size of the Rutland Ichthyosaur and a chance to try a special Rutland cocktail.
