A new web camera acquired by the Rutland Osprey Centre has captured the first, long awaited hatching of osprey chicks at Manton Bay.
Thanks to £16,000 of fundraising, the team at the Rutland Osprey Centre were able to capture, in detail, the magical moment that the first of three osprey eggs began to hatch. Their new webcam was zoomed in over the weekend after a crack was noticed by the team on the egg. The first chick began to emerge on Saturday afternoon and on Monday night a second chick began to hatch. In two months’ time all three chicks should be fully developed and may well have fledged the nest.
Project Officer Abi Mustard says that they are in for an exciting 25th anniversary season at Manton Bay. “It’s just been amazing” says Abi, “when you zoom in [with the camera] the picture quality is incredible – it’s just brilliant. Without the camera that we’ve got this year we would have missed all this.”
