Nearly 100 hens have found new homes in the Rutland and Stamford Sound area
after an event at Collyweston at the weekend. The British Hen Welfare Trust offers hens to households in return for a donation. The birds are generally around 24 months old as they finished their commercial life and typically live until their six or seven. Arthur Scott, who organises the local hen rehoming dates with his wife, Ann, says people in that area offer good support to the cause.
‘They are usually about 24 months old. They've had 18 months of egg production and yes, it's a sad fact, but after that period their usefulness for regulation is over. But I think I'm right in saying that the British Hen Welfare Trust rescued about 60,000 hens last year over the whole country. We did just over 1,000’.
