The future of Uppingham Post Office could be secured by locals becoming a member of a new Community Benefit Society.
They are being asked to invest at least £100, which it's hoped they'll see again in three years so the business can be bought, ideally in the premises it's in now, as the current postmaster gets ready to retire. Leaflets have gone out around the town and in surrounding villages to explain more. Chairman of the society, Philip Warner, says they need sufficient members to begin the process of securing the facility.
‘It is to invest. Robin wishes to retire and in order to retire, another company has to take that over and allow Robin to sell, then retire. So the Community Business Society was set up in November for volunteers to do that. And the first objective is to raise sufficient money to be able to do that, but also to do all the things we need to do, legal contracts, leases, all things like that and prove to the Post Office that we have got sufficient funds and are doing the things in the way the Post Office wishes to take over the Post Office. It's quite a protracted process but we have to raise the money first. That's the first hurdle if you like. So we have a target of trying to get 250 members which we think will be sufficient with other things planned to raise the money that's required to do this.’
