A public ceremony is taking place in Oakham this lunchtime to give thanks to Her Late Majesty
Queen Elizabeth the Second, on what would have been her 100th birthday. It is being held at the memorial statue in the Oakham Library Gardens. This statue was the first in the country to be erected after her death and attracted worldwide attention at its unveiling. An elevenses coffee morning will take place in the library before the service outside where young children will wear paper crowns and celebrate her life. The events have been organised by the King's representative, the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Doctor Sarah Furness, who also served under the Queen. And the outside service will also feature Uppingham poet and playwright Henry Dawe reading his centenary poem in tribute to the late monarch.
